How Much Does It Really Cost To Be In The Wedding Party?
July 12, 2017
The costs of being a bridesmaid or groomsman can quickly add up!
If you’ve been asked to be a bridesmaid or groomsman, you probably know you will have to dish out some money for activities and wardrobe. But do you actually know how much it will cost you? We have broken down the common costs associated with being in the wedding party so you aren’t blindsided by the bill!
Typical Expenses for a Bridesmaid
Dresses and Alterations
The average cost of a bridesmaids dress is between $150 and $250. But don’t forget to factor in the cost of
alterations, shoes and special accessories. Before you know it, that $150 can quickly double.
It can get a bit pricey when traveling to any wedding, with airfare, hotel, etc. But when you are actually in the bridal party, all of the travel for pre-wedding festivities like the bachelorette party and the wedding shower can get expensive. Travel expenses will vary, anywhere from $50 to $700, depending on location, time of year and how soon you book. You may be off the hook if you’re an out-of-towner? So don’t forget to ask first.
Time is Money
Bridesmaids need to plan to spend extra time at the wedding location. In most cases, the wedding party needs to arrive at the destination a couple days early and may also have to stay the day after. This means extra nights at their hotel and also making sure they are able to get time off of work/any other commitments.
Hair and Makeup
Sometimes a bride would prefer to have all the bridesmaids wear the same hairstyle or a specific style for each person? Be sure you ask the bride beforehand because this cost will vary from location of wedding (big city stylists usually cost more) to complexity of style, etc. The same goes for makeup. Some brides will want you to have your makeup professionally done. If you are getting your hair and/or makeup done, expect at least $50+ for each service.
Yes, even if you are I the wedding party you are still expected to buy a wedding gift. This will likely cost you $100. Then there’s the engagement party, the bridal shower AND the bachelorette gifts that are each between $75 and $100. It’s always best to be prepared and add a “gifts” section into your budget.
The Bachelorette Party
The bride usually covers some of her own costs like flight (if you are doing a destination bash) and her portion of the accommodations. But the bridesmaids will be expected to pick up the costs for the bride’s entertainment, cocktails and favors. If you are staying in town, expect to pay about $100. If you are going out of town, expect that cost to go up a few hundred more.

Typical Expenses for the Groomsmen
The Tux or Suit
